February 21st, 2014 (Friday)
Angelina and I flew out of Barcelona Friday morning at 7am to meet up with our art history class for our sprint study tour Munich, Germany at 10am. After everyone got settled in at the hotel, our class went on a bus tour to look at architecture. Since I had been up for over 30 hours at this point with zero sleep, I unfortunately kept dozing in and out of the tour, which I regret since I know we passed a lot of really cool buildings. After that, we went and got döners, which are traditional Munich sandwiches similar to kebabs. Once lunch was over, we did a short walking tour of the city center and saw some churches. Then we went to a museum called Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, a history museum where a lot of Nazi meetings were held during WWII. It was really strange to know that I was standing in the same place that Hitler once stood. It was also really interesting to listen to Germans talk about WWII and the Nazi party. This museum was also the same place where the new George Clooney movie "Monument's Men" was based. After leaving, we grabbed an early dinner at a place called Beethoven Cafe. I went back to the hotel afterwards and slept for a verrrrrry long time.
February 22nd, 2014 (Saturday)
After eating an amazing breakfast at the hotel, our class took a guided tour of a Jeff Wall photography exhibit in a classical and modern art museum. We had lunch at Cafe Puck and then headed off to Museum Brandhorst, another modern art museum. On our walk back from the museum, we saw real life Bronies, with fedoras and everything. I didn't know they existed in real life; I had only heard of them being made fun of on the Internet. So that was interesting. We grabbed some snacks and watched the Olympics before we got all dressed up to go to a symphony concert, which was surprisingly a lot of fun. It was a small symphony, only four or five people, and then two opera singers, who were super talented and actually hilarious. Once the concert was over, we headed out to a pizza parlor and tried some traditional Munich beer, which I actually really enjoyed (because it didn't taste like beer).
February 23rd, 2014 (Sunday)
Sunday was a really fun day. We grabbed breakfast at the hotel again and then headed out for the Alte Pinakothek, a huge art museum where everyone in our class had to do a presentation on a specific painting. Regina and I did Peter Paul Rubens' "The Great Last Judgment," which was absolutely massive. It was so cool seeing a painting I had studied and researched so much in real life. After our presentations, we went to lunch at a place called Paulaner Im Tal and had really delicious pretzel soup. Afterwards, we had another guided tour at a museum called Lenbachhaus which I wasn't a huge fan of, mostly because our guide talked about this painting of a blue horse for a solid thirty minutes. I never want to see a blue horse ever again. But it was worth it, because afterwards we got to have dinner at the Hofbrauhaus! It was so delicious; I got cheesy noodles and a liter of beer, which I really enjoyed. Our professor convinced the restaurant staff to include dessert in our meal, so we also had apple strudel! It was a great way to spend our last night in Munich.
February 24th, 2014 (Monday)
Since this was our last day in Munich, we had to check out of the hotel and pack up all our luggage before we visited our second to last destination, Residenz Museum, the old palace of Bavarian monarchs. The palace was gorgeous and was so ornate, it's hard to believe people actually got to live there. After our tour, we got something to eat from an outdoor market before hitting up our last museum, Neue Pinakothek. Once we finished going through that, we took a two hour bus ride to Füssen, where our class would be spending our final day in Germany. We checked into our hotel, which was beautiful (and five stars!!) and had dinner there. I put my vegetarianism on hold for a meal and got some traditional German schnitzel, which was super good. We had delicious chocolate mousse for dessert as well. Then, a group of us trekked through the streets to find a gas station where we bought some wine (we couldn't afford the good stuff the hotel sold) and watched Pride and Prejudice back in mine, Suzette, Christy, and Regina's HUGE room, which was basically an apartment. If it hadn't been lacking a kitchen, I definitely could have lived there. It was the perfect way to spend our last night together in Germany.
February 25th, 2014 (Tuesday)
We checked out of our hotel and headed out for Schloss Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig II's castle from when he ruled. It was a thirty minute walk completely uphill to get to the castle, but it was so worth it, especially since it was the castle that Walt Disney based his logo off of :) We got a quick tour of the castle before we walked another fifteen minutes uphill to get to a bridge that gave us a beautiful view of the castle as well as the Alps surrounding it. Once we got back down to the bus, we headed back for Luxembourg, which took about seven hours. I got back to Bettembourg around 8:00pm. It was a great trip and I had so much fun bonding with my classmates and professor!
